Literacy Through The Arts

CO-CREATED & CO-DIRECTED BY:

MATT SULLIVAN, COMPOSER, MUSICIAN, EDUCATOR

KEN CRO-KEN, EARTHWORK ARTIST, EDUCATOR

All projects begin and end with writing.

Enlightenment for all subjects through the arts.
HAVING FUN AND SOMETHING TO SHOW FOR IT!
The “Collective We” in Art, Education and Society
The NSS team assists students in developing their observational and learning skills.  These arts-centric projects explore the sonic and visual world through the core curriculum.  The Language Arts play a critical role in laying the foundation for all creative works.  We also offer a vocabulary that has key words and phrases that students can grasp and apply to their educational studies.  Therefore, all projects begin and end with writing and an open forum.

What our Nature of Sight and Sound (NSS) participants realize is that art today is more inclusive and that is welcome news to those who do not possess a great talent to draw, paint or sculpt.  * Post Modernism has less a visible “thing” and at times it is more about the idea than the actual art object.  The “it” in Post Modernism isn’t just a thing; the “it” is society.  Video work compliments both post modernist art and education because it can and will magnify the individual and the collective we.  Modernism creates objects and artist where in a sense archeologists dealing with artifacts.  A Post Modernist shifted the role of the artist to sociologist more interested in addressing the issues of society.  Students can express their ideas and feeling using photography, technology... and feel the inclusiveness PoMo offers all.

Much of today’s art functions in or through technology.  Film documentation is a learning tool that magnifies social conditions so that students can begin to understand their own social responsibility.  The NSS group must review given information and develop their video creation through research and discussion.  In time these multi-tasking and multi-talented artists learn to depend more on gathered information and instincts.  A powerful artist reflects society and it is our responsibility as educators and postmodernist artists to teach students how to become sensitive to: what they observe, what they learn and how they convey information and personal interpretations in an artistic and socially sensitive way.

WHO CREATED THIS MULTIMEDIA PROJECT:

Matt Sullivan & Ken Cro-Ken have been teaching for over twenty years each and are both recognized professionally for their music and art  respectively.  In 1998, they combined their knowledge, talent and teaching experience into this literacy-based project to make learning more engaging and rewarding.  They have simplified their approach without simplifying the depth of what knowledge affords those who pursue a path of enlightenment and enrichment.  Therefore, our projects can be taught from kindergarten to college to produce art and videos that encourages and rewards everyone involved... including your teaching staff.
